Northern Kenya is more an experience than a series of destinations. All who visit this wild, diverse region leave cherishing something different, that they’ll never forget.
That said, some things will be ingrained in every visitor’s psyche. The complete and utter beauty of the ‘jade sea’ (Lake Turkana), whose baking, barren shores stretch over the horizon to a distant Ethiopia some 250 km away, cant be overstated.
The many tribes of northern Kenya are some of the most fascinating people on earth- a glimpse into their world is priceless. Unique wildlife, like the reticulated giraffe and endangered Grevy’s Zebra, also call northern Kenya home, mixing with lions, elephants and Oryxes in the varied landscapes of Samburu, buffalo springs and Shaba National Reserves.
For those with energy to burn, there’s great hiking around Marich, Mararal, Marsabit and Ndoto Mountains. If walking isn’t your thing, it’s also perfect for a camel safari.
Where there’s reward, there’s usually risk and northern Kenya is no exception. Don’t expect it to be easy-the roads will batter your behind and your 4WD. But you’ll love every minute of it.
Geography of northern Kenya
Northern Kenya’s diverse landscapes are truly amazing. Deserts range from large tracts of scrub, dissected by luggas (dry river beds that burst into violent life after heavy rains)-and peppered with acacia trees, to Chalbi’s inhospitable black stones and Karoli’s soft sands.
Massive yet gently sloping, the dormant shield volcanoes of Mt. Kulal and Mt. Marsabit climb from barren plains to provide forested havens for humans and animals, while countless steep, Martian-like stratovolcanos burst from lava fields and Lake Turkana’s waters. In other areas such as North Horr, craggy peaks shelter clear streams that flow through valley oases of lush vegetation.
Lake Turkana is the North’s most renowned geographic feature and covers an amazing 6405 sqkm, making it earth’s largest permanent desert lake.
Climate
The climate here reflects the landscape’s incredible contrasts. Temperatures on the plains can reach 50o C, without a breath of wind, only for the desert’s dead calm to be shattered by sudden violent thunderstorms that drench everything and disappear as quickly as they came. It’s not uncommon to experience several weather systems during the day and still sleep under clear, star studded skies.
The lone constant is the stiffing heat and strong winds around Lake Turkana.

Nairobi Kenya restaurants;Chinese,Japanese & Thai Restaurants Kenya
Nairobi Kenya Japanese, Chinese, Thai & Asian restaurants. There are many Chinese restaurants in Nairobi Kenya serving muzak, moet and other Chinese foods. Japanese restaurant in Nairobi serve teppanyaki, udon noodles, sushi sets, sashimi, tempura, teriyaki, and sukiyaki. They even have private tatami, the Japanese traditional low table dining. Thai restaurants are also well represented in Nairobi
Nairobi has plenty of Chinese restaurants but they aren’t a cheap option. Almost all offer ‘large’ (good for two people) and ‘small’ portions (enough for one). Food is generally excellent, but all these places add 16% VAT to the bill, so prices can soon mount up.

Panda Chinese Restaurant
Fedha towers, Kaunda St; mains kshs380-1480)
A spacious very classy Asian restaurant hidden away on Kaunda St. The staffs are attentive to the point of overzealousness, especially when its quiet and the food is the best Chinese chow I have seen in Nairobi. Lovers of Muzak will also be at their element here.
Hong Kong Restaurant
(College House, Koinange St; Mains Kshs 300-600)
A bright red restaurant with good food and not too much clichéd décor. It’s the cheapest proper Chinese in town and is accordingly popular.
Bangkok Chinese restaurant
(Rank Xerox House, Parklands Rd, Westlands; Mains Kshs290-890)
The Bangkok has been in business for a number of years but was clearly named by someone with no grasp of geography, as there’s virtually nothing Thai on the menu at all. If the disappointment gets too much you can always crack open a bottle of Moet (Kshs 8990)
Tanager Bar & Restaurant
(Rehema House, Kaunda St. mains Kshs 280-350)
A cheap and simple Chinese African eatery right in the city centre.
China Jiangsu Restaurant
(Westlands Rd mains Kshs 200-600)
A stylish rooftop restaurant above Soin arcade shopping centre. Prices are very reasonable considering the classy balcony setting, and the food’s not to be sniffed at either.
Siam Thai
(Unga House, Muthithi Rd, Westlands, mains Kshs 250-680)
This attractive restaurant has an extensive menu of actual Thai food and a very good reputation. Unga House can be reached from either Woodvale grove or Muthithi Rd.
Japanese Nairobi Kenya Restaurants
Restaurant Akasaka
(Standard St, mains Kshs 450-800)
A wonderful Japanese restaurant next to the six eighty Hotel. It’s always a little quiet, but this fits the stylish Japanese décor and the food is very authentic. There’s even a tatami room (reserve in advance) where you can eat at traditional low tables. Akasaka runs the full gamut of Japanese cuisine including udon noodles, sushi sets, tempura, teriyaki, and sukiyaki as well as great miso soup. Good value set lunches is also available.
Furasato Japanese Restaurant
(Karuna Rd, Westlands; set meals Kshs 700-1500)
Behind the sarit centre, this is a very stylish place with seductive set Japanese meals including sushi, teppanyaki and tempura. The sushi and sashimi are delicious. Reservations are recommended.
There are many other Asian restaurants in Nairobi including some in leafy suburbs that may cost even twice as much as the ones included here. Depending on your taste you can enquire of the Chinese and Japanese restaurants in such areas.
Remember here that at this level of class, what your bill not only includes the food mass but also the dining ambience-something you are unlikely to take home in your tummy though.
All in all you are most likely going to find a restaurant, if not two that suits your tastes and pocket size. There is simply no lack in Asian restaurants here.

Chowpaty Pure Vegetarian Restaurant
(Shimmers Plaza, Westlands Rd, Westlands; mains Kshs 200-350)
A great Indian vegetarian restaurant. The menu is as much a manifesto as a food list, but the food is excellent and includes lots of South Indian dishes such as dhosa (lentil pancakes stuffed with vegetable curry)
Supreme restaurant
(River rd, meals Kshs 170-250)
Near the junction with Tom Mboya St, this place offers excellent Punjabi vegetarian thalis (plate meals) consisting of various curries, rice, dhal, bhajia (vegetables fried in lentil flour) and chapattis. It has also superb fruit juices.
Plaza café
(Barclay’s plaza, Loita st. mains kshs300-6000
The minar chain used to have several branches in the city centre, but now there’s just this one, set in the plaza’s basement courtyard. It specializes in Mughlai dishes but also does standard breakfasts and African dishes, plus good buffet lunches and plenty of vegetarian options.
Taj
(Taveta Rd; dishes Kshs 20-100)
Basic, ultra cheap Indian soul food around the corner from the Iqbal Hotel.
Ethiopian Food & Restaurants in Nairobi Kenya
Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant
(Arwings Kodhek Rd, Hurlingham; mains Kshs 300-450)
One of those rare places with a character all its own, blue Nile’s quirky lounge couldn’t be mistaken for anything else, painted with stories from Ethiopian mythology-if you’ve ordered one of the many goat dishes, its best not to read the panels about poison until you’ve finished your meal! For the full communal African eating experience order the seven-person doro wat (spicy traditional chicken stew, Kshs 3500) with a few glasses of tej (honey wine, Kshs 125)
Addis Ababa Restaurant
(Wood vale grove, Westlands; mains Kshs 400-500)
Unlike the Ethiopian capital itself, this place is easily missed as it’s tucked away up some stairs in an otherwise unremarkable block. Locate it and you’ll also find good authentic food and occasional live music.
Italian Restaurants in Nairobi
With Kenya’s huge Italian expats population, it’s not surprising that there are some good Italian choices here.
Trattoria
(Cnr Wabera & Kaunda sts. Mains Kshs 400-1800)
A very popular downtown restaurant swathed in trellises and plants, offering excellent pizzas, pasta, varied mains and a whole page of desserts. The atmosphere and food are excellent and it’s packed every night, especially the upstairs balcony section. Try the penne with vodka and smoked salmon (Kshs 550). A minimum spend of Kshs 500 per person applies for dinner, which is seldom a problem.
Taverna
(Woodvale grove, Westlands; mains Kshs 390-800)
A quiet sophisticated place tricked out in typical checked table cloth style; with lots of pasta choices and good seafood-tasty cognac prawns will set you back Kshs 1500
